BrainControl AAC among the 15 most innovative solutions worldwide selected by UNICEF to support children with disabilities
These were two intense days in Geneva for the special event organized by UNICEF in which BrainControl was selected with 15 other high-impact technologies.
The interactive exhibition, entitled ‘’The Role of Assistive Technology in Accelerating Learning and Participation of Children with Disabilities’’, took place from 7-8 March 2019 at the Palais des Nations in Switzerland and and highlighted the potential of new technologies, with practical demonstrations of the latest innovations in the field.
Among participants 160 representatives of permanent missions of United Nations, international and non-governmental organizations, academic and research communities, disabled persons’ organizations as well as industry partners.
The BrainControl team, invited by UNICEF to start a collaboration path from this initiative, has given practical demonstrations of how its technology can help children with disabilities to participate in many learning activities and social initiatives. On this occasion was showed the beta version of the Robotic Avatar, that it gives the possibility of interacting by remote control with a device equipped and a video camera, microphone and speaker, able to move in the environment.
Assistive technologies are essential to ensure that children with disabilities have access to inclusive and quality education and it means the difference between enjoying their rights or being deprived of them.
Kamil Goungor, chair of the European Disability Forum, has been involved in a demo of the Avatar functionality and said:
“I used it and I was happy to see the office in Siena through the avatar, so imagine some children unable to go because they are sick or unable to go at school because it is 5 km aways so they can use its where they are. If the school is not accessible they can use this technology, the computer and move the Avatar in the class to see who is speaking, what he says and be part of the class.”
Pasquale Fedele, CEO of Liquidweb declared: “In many countries AT are not available at all and in richest countries there are many issues relating the burocracy in order to make them available. Due to this, millions of children cannot benefit of social inclusion and quality education.
It was our aim to collaborate with UNICEF against these situations and we are proud to have been invited to start this collaboration path.”
BrainControl, is the innovative platform for Alternative Augmentative Communication, including BCI functionalities for LIS/CLIS patients.
It provides two main modalities of interaction “BCI AAC” and “Sensory AAC”:
The BCI AAC modality is based on Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology; it works as a sort of “mental joystick” that uses thoughts related to movement (left, right, top, bottom) to express communication choices through a computer. It is aimed to patients in Locked-in or Completely Locked-in conditions.
The Sensory AAC modality is designed for patients with a residual movement of any other part of the body. It can integrate infrared motion sensors, accelerometers and eye-tracking devices.
Thanks to a modular and personalized approach, our platform allows to fit the heterogeneous needs of many neurological patients and to use the same device despite disease progression
